Batman is a fictional character created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1939. He first appeared in Detective Comics 27 (May 1939). Batman was originally conceived as a costumed crime-fighting vigilante who fought criminals dressed in a dark costume with a cowl and a utility belt containing tools and weapons. In his early appearances he wore a cape and had no visible means of support, relying instead on acrobatics and gymnastics to stay aloft. His primary weapon was a pair of high-tech gauntlets called "gauntlets of dexterity", which allowed him to fire a variety of projectiles at his enemies.
The name "Batman" comes from the detective's alter ego Bruce Wayne, whose parents were murdered before he could remember them. As a result, he became obsessed with fighting crime and vowed to fight injustice with whatever means necessary.
In 1940, DC Comics introduced the character's sidekick Robin, who would become the second major member of the Bat Family. The two characters have remained together ever since, appearing in various comic books and television series.
Batman has been adapted into several forms of popular culture, including film, radio, television, video games, and merchandising.
Batman's popularity grew after the release of the Adam West TV series in 1966, which ran until 1968. The show was followed by three live action movies starring Burt Ward as Robin, Michael Keaton as Batman, and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. These films were successful enough to spawn a sequel trilogy of their own, beginning with 1989's Batman. A third live-action movie, Batman & Robin, was released in 1997, featuring George Clooney as Batman and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy.
A number of animated adaptations of Batman have been produced, including the 1960s television series, the 1990s cartoon series, the 2003 film Batman Begins, the 2006 direct-to-video animated film Batman Beyond, the 2007–2008 series Justice League Unlimited, the 2011 series Young Justice, and the 2017 film Birds of Prey.
