1. Water
Water is the primary resource that rice needs to live. Without water, there would not be any rice at all. Rice requires about 1/10th of its body weight in water each day to survive. Even though this ratio may seem high, rice does need plenty of water due to the fact that they store excess water in their starchy cells and do not have much surface area exposed to air. If there is not enough moisture present, then the rice will die off.
2. Light
Light, especially sunlight, is what gives rice energy and drives the plant's growth. Most of the energy in plants comes from the sun and is stored in the carbohydrate molecules (starches) inside the plant. Sunlight contains energy, which the plant uses to make starch. When the plant makes starch, it stores the energy produced by the sun as sugar, which is now usable by the plant. In order to take advantage of the energy contained in the sun, the plant needs access to light.
3. Soil
Soil is the medium that rice lives in. A good portion of the root system of rice grows below ground, so having a good quality soil is really important. One way to measure the quality of a soil is by measuring the pH levels. There are many different types of soils based on their pH level.
4. Temperature
Temperature is the amount of heat in the environment around the plants. Too cold and the plant cannot use energy efficiently. Too hot and the plant will wither away. Temperate climates are ideal for growing rice. These areas of the world tend to have moderate temperatures throughout the year, meaning that it is neither too hot nor too cold.
5. Time
Time is how long it takes for rice to mature. Depending on the variety of rice, it could be anywhere between 50 days to 100 days. Once matured, rice is ready to eat.
