The Great Wall of china dates back to the 6th century BC. However, its history spans thousands of years. The first wall wasn't built until the 4th century BC, but construction had been going on since at least the 2nd century BC. Construction really started to take off after Emperor Qin Shi Huang declared himself emperor in 221 BC. The greatest period of expansion occurred between the 7th and 13th centuries. The Ming Dynasty alone erected over 32,000 miles of wall.
3. Why Is the Great Wall Still Standing?
The great wall stood for hundreds of years because of two reasons. First, it’s incredible durability. The wall is made out of millions of tons of stone, and they chose the right type of stone for their purpose. Second, the wall was meant to protect the country from foreign invasions. Instead, the wall became a symbol of pride for the Chinese people. People began calling it “the High Road” and eventually “China”.
